Swim with the Whale Sharks
Experience the most exciting eco-tour in the world, swimming with the Whale Sharks. On Isla Mujeres is here to help make your day on the water perfect!
Swimming with the Whale Sharks
Swimming with the whale sharks is seasonal activity. The season runs from mid-May to mid-September.
Whale sharks are huge but gentle and curious creatures that migrate to the waters near Isla Mujeres. They are filter fish that feed on plankton in the water. They move slowly and gracefully through the water scooping up the plankton. Although a form of shark, they are not aggressive and it is completely safe to swim with them. We take care to place you near them in the water (with a guide) so that it requires minimal effort to see them.
Some have described this adventure as a life changing experience, so swimming with the whale sharks is bound to be a trip that you will never forget!
We serve a premium continental breakfast (breakfast breads, fruits, yogurt, granola, coffee and orange juice) promptly at 8:00 am. We leave the dock upon completion of breakfast and information around 8:30-8:45 - please don't be late! We don't want to leave you behind! Enjoy the scenic views during the ride to and from the whale sharks. After snorkeling with the whale sharks, we will head back to a spot north of the Island for additional snorkeling, swimming and relaxing while we prepare fresh ceviche for you. When the group is finished, we serve the ceviche for you to eat during our short ride back to the dock. We typically return between 2 and 4 pm.
What to Bring
- We provide all snorkeling gear and life jackets, but if you prefer your own gear, you may bring it.
- Wear a swim wear and bring a towel.
- We highly suggest eco-friendly sunscreen.
- Sunglasses and a hat
NOTE: You are required by regulation to wear a life jacket during all snorkeling activities. We issue life vests as part of the trip. As an alternative, you can opt to rent a wet suit for $10 USD or 120 pesos.
To ensure a great trip, we suggest taking it easy the night before (no or very little drinking) and taking a motion sickness prevention of some sort (for example, Dramamine) to prevent motion sickness - a dose the night before and a non-drowsy/less drowsy dose the morring of the trip. People who have done this have reported having no troubles at all.
